Grief & Loss: Universal Experiences

  1. Grieving can be painful. It stirs feelings of profound sadness and longing that many find unbearable.

  2. The reality of loss can be tragic and stressful. Introducing a level of emotional turmoil that can feel overwhelming.

  3. Acknowledging loss requires us to accept significant or irreversible changes in our lives that can uproot our sense of stability and continuity.

  4. We tend to shy away from discussing grief and loss rather than confront the transient nature of life.

Personal Implications of Loss

Individual loss can trigger a broad spectrum of emotional, physical, and psychological responses. Emotionally, the individual is likely to experience intense feelings of sadness, anger, anxiety, and helplessness.

Material Loss

Physical object, job, house, finances, or the freedom to move about, can profoundly impact individuals.

Relationship Loss

The end of an opportunity to relate oneself to another, share experiences, and engage in common human interactions such as debates, arguments, or simply casual conversations.

Functional Loss

Impairment or loss of normal bodily functions, often resulting from neurological or muscular disorders. Conditions such as stroke can lead to functional loss.

Role Loss

A shift from one's regular position or responsibilities within a social network. This might occur when one retires, alters careers, or begins to provide care for a family member.

Systemic Loss

Experienced when life progresses in its natural course - for example, when a child leaves home for college, military service, or matrimony.

Intrapsychic Loss

The loss of an emotionally significant image of oneself or the abandonment of plans, dreams, or expectations for the future.

Men Stop Avoiding the Doctor

Significant Health Risks

In the United States, adult men face significant health risks, with heart disease, cancer, unintentional injuries, chronic lower respiratory disease, and stroke featuring prominently as leading causes of death.

Recognizing the Symptoms

Recognizing the signs and symptoms of these diseases is the first step toward prevention and timely treatment. Regular health check-ups can be crucial in early detection and management of these diseases.

S. Keene

Mental Health Professional

I needed help processing my grief when my mom passed away suddenly. I was initially concerned about choosing a Grief counselor because of the stigma around seeking professional help. What I found was Dr. Virginia Price was so compassionate and knowledgeable which made it comfortable for me to listen to her advice and find my “New Normal” of how to cope with the loss of my mom.

Because of the results that I got from working with Dr. Price, her ability to listen actively, and her positive motivation during my grief process, I am now committed to working with her on other areas of my life as an ongoing client.

I. Baker

Client

I met Dr. Price about 10 years ago at our local Church.  She has been a spark of positivity since the moment we met. We have worked together in ministry, helping people in the church as well as servicing the community via senior living and chaplaincy care. The most impactful influence that Dr. Price has had on my life may have saved my life and others.  I was fortunate enough to participate in an informational study she conducted on why African-American males do not go to the doctor regularly.  The main subject matter was prostate exams. Since this forum, I have received a full check-up from my primary care physician annually (on my birthday). Nothing is more valuable than a relationship with someone who may add life to your own value.  This is why I call her “PRICELESS”. Thank you, Virginia Price!
