Men's Health

Special Initiative for Men & African-American Men

We’ve initiated a distinctive program dedicated to men, with a particular emphasis on African-American men. Our aim is to provide a safe, supportive, and empowering environment where attendees can gain essential insights and tools.

Our offerings include support groups, seminars, and workshops addressing crucial issues like understanding why many Black men often avoid medical check-ups, coping mechanisms for grief and loss, managing PTSD, and dealing with the unique grief triggered by the pandemic.

Our Approach to Holistic Wellness

We strive to create a community where men can connect with others who share similar experiences, challenges, and goals. We are committed to breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and empowering men to prioritize their well-being. Join us in this meaningful journey towards personal growth, healing, and resilience. Let’s support each other and thrive together.

Each session is designed to foster open dialogue, promote mental health, and encourage proactive steps towards well-being.

Support Groups

Gain a safe space to express their emotions, share their experiences, and learn practical coping strategies.

Seminars

Gain valuable insights into understanding and managing their mental health challenges, breaking down stigmas associated with seeking help.

Workshops

Gain not only a deeper understanding of their emotional responses to trauma and grief but also practical tools to manage these emotions effectively.

Grief & Men

Grief affects men in unique ways, often due to societal expectations and norms regarding masculinity. Men are frequently taught from a young age to suppress their emotions, leading many to internalize their grief rather than express it openly.

Physically

Physically, grief can manifest as sleep disturbances, changes in appetite, or even increased health risks due to stress.

Emotionally

Emotionally, unresolved grief can contribute to conditions like depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.

How Men Handle Loss

Loss refers to the experience of parting with an object, individual, or concept that one holds significant. It is an inevitable part of life and can occur in various forms, including the death of a loved one, end of a relationship, loss of health, or even the loss of a job.

Men are expected to remain stoic and strong in the face of adversity, which can influence them to suppress their emotions or adopt a problem-solving orientation towards loss.
Men often have a unique approach to dealing with loss, and it is greatly influenced by societal expectations and gender norms.
loss can also lead to personal growth, resilience, and a newfound appreciation for life.
loss can vary greatly between individuals, shaped by personal circumstances, cultural background, and the nature of the loss itself.
Loss is a universal experience that reminds us of our shared humanity, resilience, and capacity for empathy and compassion.
Mens may downplay their feelings, retreat into their work, or focus on practical matters related to the loss, such as organizing a funeral or settling legal affairs.
Internal distress can sometimes be expressed indirectly through physical symptoms, changes in behavior, or even through increased risk-taking activities.
Men also may grieve in a more private manner, sharing their feelings with only a select few or finding solace in solitary activities.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

A mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event. It is a complex and severe response to extreme stress, such as exposure to a natural disaster, violent assault, war, or a traumatic accident.

How Men Handle Pandemic Grief

Pandemic grief, a relatively new term, refers to the complex layers of loss experienced during a global health crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic. It encompasses not just the grief associated with the death of loved ones due to the virus but also the grief stemming from the loss of normalcy, routine, social connections, job security, and overall sense of safety.

1.Men's Handling of the Pandemic

Men's handling of pandemic grief can vary significantly, often influenced by societal perceptions of masculinity and strength.

2.Suppression

Men may suppress their feelings or engage in problem-solving behavior in an attempt to regain a sense of control during the pandemic.

3.Work vs. Routines

Some men might immerse themselves in work. Others may strive to maintain a sense of normalcy by sticking to routines or focusing on practical matters such as their families' physical health and safety.

4.Support for Men

Many men find respite in engaging with support networks, sharing their experiences, and seeking professional help to manage their feelings.

5.Support Networks

Online support groups, teletherapy, and maintaining connections with friends and family, albeit virtually, can be particularly beneficial.

We offer support groups and workshops tailored to help men, and specifically African-American men, navigate through pandemic grief.

S. Keene

Mental Health Professional

I needed help processing my grief when my mom passed away suddenly. I was initially concerned about choosing a Grief counselor because of the stigma around seeking professional help. What I found was Dr. Virginia Price was so compassionate and knowledgeable which made it comfortable for me to listen to her advice and find my “New Normal” of how to cope with the loss of my mom.

Because of the results that I got from working with Dr. Price, her ability to listen actively, and her positive motivation during my grief process, I am now committed to working with her on other areas of my life as an ongoing client.

I. Baker

Client

I met Dr. Price about 10 years ago at our local Church.  She has been a spark of positivity since the moment we met. We have worked together in ministry, helping people in the church as well as servicing the community via senior living and chaplaincy care. The most impactful influence that Dr. Price has had on my life may have saved my life and others.  I was fortunate enough to participate in an informational study she conducted on why African-American males do not go to the doctor regularly.  The main subject matter was prostate exams. Since this forum, I have received a full check-up from my primary care physician annually (on my birthday). Nothing is more valuable than a relationship with someone who may add life to your own value.  This is why I call her “PRICELESS”. Thank you, Virginia Price!
